Lessons Plan

Throughout the year our fellows and teaching teams work together to develop lessons to supplement and enhance the textbooks used in the Detroit Public Schools. We have tried to organize the lessons by category. The lesson are posted as either Microsoft word .doc format or Adobe Acrobat .pdf format. Some lessons contain separate documents for both the teacher and the student.

Math Lab skills Astronomy Physics Chemistry
Earth science Biology Microbiology Genetics

Math

number line.pdf This a large number line that can be printed, taped together and hung on the wall.

Math Olympic Games.doc This is a collection of math games used in the Math Corps program during the summer at Wayne State University

Lab skills

SI units.doc This lesson will introduce students to the System International unit system.

Basic skills of microscopy.doc This lesson covers the basic use of a microscope and will help introduce students to the microscope.

Density.doc This lesson introduces students to the concept of density. It also strengthens skills using volume and mass measurement

Astronomy

This is a hands on lesson that uses a hands-on activity to explore how and why the moon has phases. Moon Phases: Teacher.doc and Moon Phases: Student.doc

Physics

This lesson explores buoyant force with a couple hands-on http://sun2.science.wayne.edu/~gk12/lessons.Eureka I Found It: teacher.pdf udated and Eureka I found it: student.doc

This lesson explores how the weight of an object can be measured if the pressure exerted on it by gas in a cylinder is measured. Side note on how to measure the weigth of an automobile by measuring its tires is included in the teacher document. Weight Under Pressure.doc

This is a lesson origionally designed for the Math Corps Program at Wayne State University. It involves the building and launching of model rockets. During the launch, students take measurements and then calculate the altitude of flight of the rockets. rocket science.pdf

Chemistry

An activity to study the motion of molecules. Lesson Plan Arrangement and Motion of Molecules in Common Phases of Matter.doc

An experiment to study how reacting chemicals can absorb or release energy during the process of a reactyion Chemical energy.doc

Uses light sticks to study how chemical reactions can release energy in the form of light ChemicalEnergyandLight.doc

A fun game to study how chemicals in the atmosphere lead to ozone depletion ozonetag.doc

Study how liquids mix via diffusion Solutions.doc

Earth Science

Acid Rain.doc This lesson briefly explores acids and bases with a discussion about acid rain at the end.

Atmosphere & Weather.doc demonstration is performed to show students the various stages of the water cycle.

Drinking water.doc To simulate nature's water filtration system by devising a system that will filter out both visible and invisible pollutants from water.

Evaporation Experiment.docTo discover factors affecting the rate of evaporation.
